My life in ministry at St Catherine’s started out by filling in an open role. Shortly after I was confirmed, there was an opening to teach Faith Formation for second grade. As my wife and kids were already part of the program, I volunteered to fill the spot for the year. Little did I know that role would expand and allow me to grow as a person and enhance my knowledge of our church.
By teaching second graders, I started to learn about my faith more in depth. It opened the window to some of the why’s and thoughts of the Catholic church. Since then I have been as much as a student as a teacher. I have gone to expand my knowledge by taking part in Serra Catechetical Institute and I am now enrolled in the School of Pastoral Ministry. Both programs have allowed me to become a better teacher for the seventh/eighth graders that I have taught now for last seven plus years.
Being part of Faith Formation has led me to many other different ministries. I assisted in forming and serving on the Finance Committee for three years. Once again, I learned and realize another side of the church I had never thought of before I was asked to partake. On the Finance Committee, I was able to use my life’s profession to the good of the church.
This year, I have volunteered to be an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. After so many years, I have always wondered what happens at the altar. Now, I have a front row seat. Not only am I going to the Mass, I am now an active participant in it. I truly feel this is an honor to do and, once again, it is deepening my faith in the Catholic Church.
The one aspect about all my different roles in the church that I have appreciated is the people I have interacted with over the years. St Catherine Church has so many talented people that it amazes me. I have been blessed to meet so many great individuals. Every single one of us brings talent and experience to our parish. I truly believe the only way to become aware of each other’s gifts is to volunteer for a ministry and let God guide us.
