Who We Are & Why We Serve
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international organization of Catholic lay people, founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam and his companions. Placed under patronage of St. Vincent de Paul, it derives its inspiration from his thinking and work, and seeks, in a spirit of justice and charity, by the person to person involvement of its members, to help those who are suffering. The primary role of the Vincentian is not to pay bills, furnish groceries, or clothe someone. The role of the Vincentian is to provide loving and compassionate interest in individuals. If that interest calls for food, clothing or other assistance, so be it. However, it is in loving where the contact with Christ emerges. That contact with Christ is what separates the Society of St. Vincent de Paul from just another social agency. The Conference of St. Vincent de Paul here at St. Catherine meets weekly in prayer and service, distributing groceries and food gift cards to the needy in Martinez and Pacheco. The conference participates monthly in the preparation of food at Loaves and Fishes, as well as developing teams for home visits in our community, growing our Vincentian youth group, and reaching out in service to the non-English speaking community. The conference will be meeting the third Monday each month in the evening, for those who are unavailable to participate in the daytime. There are many ways to serve and we welcome all to meet Christ in the faces of those who are suffering. There are currently 20 active members of the Conference and we serve approximately 100 families a month from our Pantry. We have been serving the needy of our community for 60 years.
